In the summer we love being on the boulevard. Great people watching and close to fun touristy places. I suggest you see Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the beach.. Taxi's are available.. and there are some busses too.. But I suggest renting a car if possible. We stay at the Sand's resorts in NMB.. but we have a car available.

Myrtle Beach is a small town. Down by the beach is the boulevard, lots of interesting places to eat and see. However by the far the coolest place in Myrtle beach is "Broadway at the beach" It is a large area, sort of like an outdoor mall that is all boardwalks. It is filled with shops, theaters, play theaters, indoor fun zones for kids such as laser tag, etc.. and Many cool restaurants like Jimmy buffets margaritaville, and the hard rock cafe, also that is that is the KISS cafe, and many bars which offer live entertainment on the weekends. At night the boardwalks are lit up by Christmas lights, and it is a very fun place to go. In fact, you haven't experienced myrtle beach, until you have been there.
Across from Broadway at the beach is the NASCAR restaurant with a go-kart race track. And on the other side of BATB is all your normal shopping stores such as target, bed bath and beyond, etc...
So by far you want to get a hotel near Broadway at the beach, it is only a mile or 2 from the beach boulevard, and you will never run out of things to do. When asking around for hotels, ask them about it and they will tell you everything else you need to know.
The beach boulevard is LOADED with hotels. Cheap, expensive, more than you could imagine, so you wont have a hard time finding it all.

I think Ocean Blvd of Myrtle Beach proper from about 14th Ave N to about 40th Ave N.
I like Dayton House at Ocean Blvd and about 24th ave best for affordability.
You really do need to rent a car in Myrtle Beach, not much within walking distance of beach hotels.
