Bobby Perkinson Wins 2010 GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship

September 3, 2010, Murrells Inlet, S.C. – Bobby Perkinson of Alcoa, Tenn., a 4.4-handicap golfer, shot a net 69 (gross 74) on Friday to win the 2010 GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach. The 74-year-old retiree is the lowest handicap to win the event since Dennis Connors won it with a 3.3 handicap in 1995.

Perkinson’s win also breaks a three-year streak where a woman won the GOLF.com World Am. Two years ago, a fellow Tennessean, Paula Morton, won the GOLF.com World Am. Perkinson, the winner of flight 57, won from the Super Senior division (70 and older).

“I just came down to have some fun and play some golf in Myrtle Beach” said Perkinson. “I won my flight on Thursday when a competitor double bogeyed the last hole, so I felt fortunate to make it to the finals. In the championship, I was 2-under on the front nine and hung on at a very challenging TPC Myrtle Beach golf course. This was my third time playing in the GOLF.com World Am, so maybe the third time was the charm.”

Bobby Wallace of White Plains, Md. and Charles Rowan of Gap Mills, WV captured the 2010 International Pairs Championship by shooting a 148 net team score in Friday’s championship round. The title earned them an all-expenses paid trip to Scotland to represent the United States in the 2011 International Pairs World Finals.

“We just seemed to be the perfect team” said Wallace. “One day, I wouldn’t play well and Charles would pick me up. Then, when Charles didn’t play well, I seemed to pick us up. That’s what this competition is all out, we had a great time in Myrtle Beach and we’re proud to be representing the GOLF.com World Am in Scotland.”

“What a great week of golf in Myrtle Beach,” said Dave Macpherson, tournament director of the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship. “I cannot remember a week with better weather or a field as competitive as this one. Congratulations to Bobby Perkinson for winning our championship and thanks to all 3,100 golfers for coming to Myrtle Beach to participate in this event. We hope to see everyone back next year.”

Charlie McDonald of Westminster, Md. and Yogi McDonald of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. won the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship, a tournament for any combination of parent and child participating in the World Amateur. Before tragically losing his life in a 2006 motorcycle accident, Lemke competed in the World Am with his father, Mark Lemke and won his flight in 2002 at the age of 15.

Hosted by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship is considered to be the most comparable experience to the U.S. Open for the amateur golfer. Held the week before Labor Day, the event is open to all amateur golfers with a verifiable USGA handicap, or the foreign equivalent. Flighted according to their handicaps, golfers competed in four rounds with all 68 flight winners and 11 ties then advancing to today’s 18-hole world championship playoff at TPC Myrtle Beach.

This year, nearly 3,100 players from 48 states and 18 countries competed on more than 55 Myrtle Beach area golf courses in the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, the first as a title sponsor for the SPORTS ILLUSTRATED GOLF GROUP. The SI GOLF GROUP is a unit within the SPORTS ILLUSTRATED GROUP. It is the No. 1 media company in golf with a combined audience of 12.6 million avid golfers and fans. Writers were imbedded into the World Am field as they played with actual participants. Writers will be contributing articles to SI Golf Group’s various media platforms including GOLF Magazine, SI Golf + and GOLF.com.

The GOLF.com World Am featured six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years-of-age and under to the super seniors 70 years-of-age and older. Players with handicaps as low as three and as high as 34 have won the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship.

September 2, 2010, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – A total of 68 flight winners and 11 ties advanced to the championship round of the 27th annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship after the final full day of competitive play on Thursday. The championship round will be played on Friday at TPC Myrtle Beach, as the remaining golfers will compete in an 18-hole battle to determine the 2010 “World’s Amateur Handicap Golf Champion.”

The final full competitive round was played under cloudy skies as Hurricane Earl passed well to the east of the Myrtle Beach area, sparing the coast of any rain or wind and preserving a safe final round for all competitors. Arguably, the biggest name participating in the GOLF.com World Am was former major league pitcher Roger Clemens. The 7-time Cy Young award-winner shot a final round 86 gross, or 81 net, and finished with a four-day total of 313 and 18th in his flight.

“It looks like we will get through the GOLF.com World Am without a drop of rain and the stage is set for a tremendous final round at TPC Myrtle Beach” said Dave Macpherson, tournament director of the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship. “TPC Myrtle Beach is the perfect setting for the championship round. We wish all the competitors advancing to the final round good luck as they pursue the right to be called the ‘World Amateur Handicap Golf Champion.’”

TPC Myrtle Beach will also host the finals of the United States Qualifier for the International Pairs Championship with the winning duo receiving an all-expense paid trip to Scotland and to represent the United States in the 2010 International Pairs World Finals.

World Am participants also entered the final day of competition in both the International Pairs Championship and the Mark and Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship. Golfers are battling to win an all-expense paid trip to Scotland to represent the United States in the 2010 International Pairs World Finals. The Mark and Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship, open to any combination of parent and child participating, honors Lemke who won his World Am flight at the age of 15 in 2002 before losing his life in a 2006 motorcycle accident.

Thursday was also the final night of activities at the “World’s Largest 19th Hole” at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The highlight of the evening was an appearance by GOLF Magazine contributing writer and network golf analyst David Feherty who entertained the more than 3,000 attendees as he shared stories from his years in the game as a player and as an announcer.

This year, nearly 3,100 players from 48 states and 18 countries competed in the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, the first as a title sponsor for the Sports Illustrated Golf Group. Hosted by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship is a 72-hole, net stroke play tournament. Players are arranged into flights according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the four rounds, flight winners advance to the 18-hole world championship playoff on Friday, September 3.

The World Am features six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years-of-age and under to the super seniors 70 years-of-age and older. Players with handicaps as low as three and as high as 34 have won the GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship and a woman has won the last three titles including 2009 winner Linda Fuller from Richmond, Texas.
