South Carolina’s schools aren’t up to speed yet. North Carolina’s are. I wouldn’t base not moving to an area on it’s
“roads”. If you think about it, there’s probably a reason why there are growing pains in a specific area…because its a good place to live.
I used to live in Chapel Hill – Carrboro in North Carolina, and can tell you after living in many bigger cities, it’s still the best place I’ve ever lived and can’t wait to get back.
The public schools there are among the best in the country, among the top 40 in the US.
Chapel Hill/Carrboro is less traffic clogged than Raleigh and Cary, which is where a lot of people are moving (not sure why, lots of McMansions and traffic).
Chapel Hill is a “big small town”, home of the University of North Carolina, big city things to do without the hassle. Carrboro is a smaller town directly adjacent, my favorite of the two.

I lived in NC for a long time and loved it. I lived in Kernersville, its right between Winston Salem and Greensboro, two decently sized cities. A lot of people are moving to the Carolinas, but it isnt anywhere as populated as NJ where I live now. There is still more open land there, then neighborhoods and pavement. Its beautiful and the people are a bit nicer. (well nicer than north east coasters) It may be a culture shock depending on where you are from, but easy enough to get used to. The houses and tax’s are soooo much cheaper, everything else like gas and food is the same though. So depending where you are moving from and if you are selling a house, you will probably love the prices of real estate there. Check out craigslist.com. There are a lot of homes for sale/apts/condos and you can check out the prices for NC and SC. The school systems in NC are good. I went to school there 3rd grade, and 7th-9th. I had good teachers and great schools. Just check them out by way of the internet. You can proobably find a group online from those areas that you can communicate with to get your answers. I envy you and wish you luck!!! P.S….the food is a whole nother reason to move down south :)
