October 12, 2009, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Thirty-four Grand Strand courses were honored in the 2010 Golf World Readers’ Choice Awards that recognized the best public, private and resort facilities in the country. The golf courses were recognized in three Top 50 categories, which featured the 50 top vote getters, and the Best-in-State category, which honored the courses that scored a minimum of 75 points. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (No. 20) and True Blue Plantation (No. 26) were listed in the Top 50 Public Golf Facilities category while Dunes Golf and Beach Club (No. 42) was honored in the Top 50 Resorts category.

South Carolina led all states with 44 courses with 27 from the Myrtle Beach area. Seven additional courses, located in Brunswick County, N.C., were honored, and are considered a part of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch from Southport, N.C. to Georgetown, S.C. North Carolina was second with 41 courses with California third with 39.

The Myrtle Beach area Best-in-State courses included Arrowhead Country Club, Barefoot Resort & Golf, Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Link, The Resort Course at Grande Dunes, Heather Glen Golf Links, Heritage Club, The International Golf Club of Myrtle Beach, The Legends Resort, Litchfield Country Club, The Long Bay Club, Man O’War Golf, Myrtle Beach National Golf Club, Myrtlewood Golf Club, Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club, Pine Lakes Country Club, River Club, River Hills Golf & Country Club, Tidewater Golf Club & Plantation, TPC Myrtle Beach, Wachesaw Plantation Club, Wild Wing Plantation, The Witch, The Wizard and World Tour Golf Links.

The Brunswick County courses honored in the Best-in-State rankings included Crow Creek Golf Club, Ocean Ridge Plantation, Oyster Bay Golf Links, Rivers Edge Golf Club, Sea Trail Golf Resort and Thistle Golf Club.

Thirty-three of the 34 courses are Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday member courses with Wachesaw Plantation Club, a private golf club in Murrells Inlet, as the lone non-Golf Holiday member to be recognized.

“The Grand Strand is well known for having more Top 100 golf courses than any other destination and for providing the best value for the golfer,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “Golf World’s Readers’ Choice Awards reports the opinions of the average golfer and we are honored that so many golfers selected many Grand Strand courses as their favorites in the state of South Carolina.”

The Readers’ Choice Awards are based solely on reader input gathered by Golf Digest Publications’ Research Resource Center via an online poll. Using a 10-point scale, readers graded facilities based on the 12 criteria which included quality of course; condition of course; reputation and prestige; golf practice facilities; speed of play; clubhouse/locker rooms; hotel accommodations; caddie program; golf pro shop; food/dining; off-course activities/amenities; service and overall value.

To arrive at an overall aggregate score for each facility, Golf World calculated the average ratings received in all applicable criteria. The raw scores were weighted to reflect different levels of significance for each of the criteria, with the formula varying based on the category. The overall total then was recalculated to a 100-point scale so a perfect score on every ballot yielded an aggregate of 100.
